more in the life of Marlowe.

I really love sculpting this tiny monster, I really do.

There’s a bunch of them that I didn’t post on this blog over on my Marlowe website! It updates every Wednesday, and sometimes more often.

hand drawn type

May 20th, 2010 § 0

Hand Job: A Catalog of Type is the book sitting by my bathroom sink right now, and I’ve been reading it quite a bit lately(it’s the antibiotics).

Anyway, it got me inspired to draw these little cards. They’re sort of little conversation cards that you can hand out to people, or just place wherever you’d like something a bit life affirming.

And – if you would like to print them yourselves, the high res .jpg files are below!

high res: [love everyone|you're awesome|love your smile|you are so pretty]

They are 638×1088 pixels at 300 dpi, which is business card printing sized at Overnight Prints. I’m going to print a batch for myself soon! They can make them with adorable little rounded corners, really nice, thick cardstock, and cost about $5 for 50 cards(and $2 for 25). If you do that, Google a discount code – they always have them.

Today, I love you!

more of Marlowe!

May 19th, 2010 § 0

So I’ve decided to do a recurring…thing…with Marlowe. The poor monster.

Check out a small collection of Marlowe pictures at his website, and there’ll be a new one every Wednesday!

I bought all of this doll furniture a while back and I can’t remember why.

mother’s day monster

May 16th, 2010 § 0

My mom got her Mother’s Day monster, so here’s a picture of it! She asked me for a monster for Mother’s Day – how awesome is my mom? Super awesome, that’s what.

partaaaay in downtown LA

May 11th, 2010 § 0

My art’s in a downtown gallery this Thursday! And it’ll be there for a month! Check it out, if you can…it’s in Immortal Gallery on 6th and Spring Street – the gallery is opening for the first time ever this Thursday so there isn’t really anything online about it yet.

I’ll be there, it’ll be fun, come say hi. I have 8 wall plaque pieces up there(tentacles, dissections, monsters, mushrooms…), all of which are pretty small, but pretty cool.

This specimen is Custer. He is not in the gallery, but he is on Etsy!

maomao doesn’t really like you.

May 10th, 2010 § 0

I want to post the squiggly monster I made my mom for mother’s day(on her request – she was a bit annoyed i hadn’t already made her a monster), but I think she sometimes reads this blog.

So, here’s a different monster. You may have seen it on my worktable before.

maomao

MaoMao was created from a combination of amphibious and fully aquatic species. It is possible that genes from a potato may have made their way in as well.

hives, hives!

May 8th, 2010 § 0

So, I’m on self imposed house quarantine now because I have a ridiculous outbreak of hives all over my face and it’s been three days. The doctor helpfully told me that they never figure out what causes it 90% of the time and prescribed me a wonderful corticosteroid that makes me hungry and suppresses my immune system.

Anyway, I didn’t want to be the splotchiest face in the house, so I painted this watermelon.

mel

His name is Mel the Watermelon.

new specimens!

May 7th, 2010 § 0

I’ve been on this specimens-that-look-like-bugs kick lately, which really just results in more specimens that look like bugs. I’ve also been obsessively looking at pictures of pitcher plants, although I have yet to sculpt anything that looks like them.

Here’s one of my new specimens. He’s a paranoid little fella. I just uploaded him(and a couple other new ones) to my Etsy store.

gelatinous cube still loves you

May 5th, 2010 § 3

This is yesterday’s experiment.

I made a gelatinous cube mold, and I made some soap with it! The brown bits are plastic skulls embedded in it, but they’ll probably get in the way once the soap gets that far.

Right now, one smells like vanilla and the other is unscented. i’m trying to get the scent proportions right and might play w/ some pigments too. But they look pretty cool!
